Growing community partnership in creating public safety
Impact for Equity has been a longstanding, active member of the Grassroots Alliance for Police Accountability (GAPA), a coalition focused on the creation of a Community Commission that provides community oversight of the Chicago Police Department to improve public safety, as well as district councils in each of Chicago’s 22 police districts.
The creation of this oversight system – the most democratic form of police oversight in the United States – has opened opportunities and challenges for community engagement in the creation of public safety in Chicago.
Impact for Equity’s partnership with GAPA in these efforts is ongoing as we work to compile community-driven recommendations for the successful operation of and collaboration between the newly created District Councils, the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, and Chicagoans. In addition, we develop and publish thought leadership on Chicago’s community oversight model as a national model.
