There has been a nearly 700% increase in traffic stops in Chicago since 2015, totaling 537,313 stops in the year 2023. Less than 1% of these stops produce any firearms or contraband, less than 4% have led to citation, and less than 3% have led to arrest, contrary to their purported purpose of increasing roadway and public safety. The data reveals that these stops disproportionately target Black and Latine communities.

Impact for Equity partners with the Free2Move Coalition, a group of organizations and individuals focused broadly on mobility justice, to develop and promote policies to end pretextual traffic stops and consent searches made during traffic stops. In partnership with the Coalition, along with national experts, advocates, community organizers, and system stakeholders, we educate and advocate for strategies that decriminalize mobility.
