Release to Restore

The nearly 30,000 people living in Illinois prisons are subject to limited resources for rehabilitation and poor, sometimes deadly, living conditions. Even so, the Illinois Department of Corrections, the state agency with the highest level of annual spending, spends nearly $2 billion every year.   Impact for Equity develops strategies driven by directly impacted communities and supported with evidence-based research and legal and policy analysis, to reduce the size of Illinois’ prison system. We  work in coalition  to develop a multi-year strategy to implement mechanisms for the release of people currently incarcerated, decrease the size of the carceral system, and ultimately close more prisons in Illinois.
