April Guevara Espinoza

April Guevara Espinoza is beginning her legal career as a Polikoff-Gautreaux Fellow on Impact for Equity’s Criminal Legal System team. In this role, she will focus on legal and policy strategies to addressing the harms of mass incarceration and will explore alternative solutions to policing and public safety.

Prior to joining Impact for Equity as a fellow, April interned with Impact for Equity’s Criminal Legal Systems team and at the Cook County Public Defender’s Office.

April is from the border town of Yuma, Arizona and moved to Chicago in 2022 for law school. She holds a JD from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and a BS in Public Service and Public Policy from Arizona State University. At Northwestern, she worked as a writing fellow, research assistant, and as a student attorney in the MacArthur Justice Center and Community Justice and Civil Rights Clinic. She served as Managing Articles Editors for the Journal of Law and Social Policy and on the boards of the Latiné Law Students Association and International Refugee Assistance Project.   April published Humanizing the Mexican Migrant in Northwestern’s Journal of Law and Social Policy and was one of 19 students who received an honor for volunteering over 200 hours of public service.
